Model History
In 1999, Porsche unveiled the 996 GT3 R as a successor to the iconic air-cooled 993 RSR. Prior to its official launch, the car underwent rigorous testing at both the Weissach and Paul Ricard circuits. To shed weight compared to the GT3 road car, Porsche utilized carbon fiber body panels and plexi-glass windows at the rear and sides. The front end of the car was redesigned with additional air inlets for improved engine and brake cooling. Inside, a steel roll cage was integrated into the body for added safety, along with features like a full air-jack system, fire extinguisher, and a racing seat equipped with safety harnesses.
The suspension system of the GT3 R was based on that of the GT3 road car but featured enhancements such as variable springs, adjustable shocks, anti-roll bars, and spherical joints for optimal performance. Braking power was provided by large discs without ABS. The heart of the GT3 R was the 3.6-liter M96/77 engine, producing 405bhp at 8,200rpm with a 43.1 mm air restrictor plate to comply with class regulations. The engine boasted upgrades like titanium conrods and valves, a racing exhaust system, and a dry-sump lubrication system with an oil-water heat exchanger. A 6-speed sequential manual transmission completed the powertrain setup.
Notable achievements of the GT3 R include class victories at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1999 onwards until 2006. In 2004, Porsche introduced the pinnacle of the 996 GT3 racing lineage with the 996 GT3 RSR. This model featured a potent 450bhp 3.8-liter flat-6 engine paired with a 6-speed sequential manual gearbox. Further weight reduction was achieved through the increased use of carbon fiber panels. While only 37 RSRs were factory-built, many R and RS models were upgraded to RSR specifications.
Chassis #3087
In April 2004, chassis #3087 was crafted for the Germany-based semi-Works Team Freisinger Motorsport as a pristine GT3 RSR in Carreraweiss (white) with full ACO specifications. Freisinger Motorsport is a well-established racing team based in Germany with a strong track record in international competitions. Known for their expertise and success in motorsport, Freisinger Motorsport has consistently showcased top-tier performance on the racing circuit.
For the upcoming 2004 season, Freisinger Motorsport campaigned the car with great success in various prestigious competitions including the FIA GT series and other renowned international championships.
In a thrilling start to the 2004 racing season, chassis #3087 of Freisinger Motorsport made a statement at the 1,000kms of Monza on May 9th. Piloted by the talented duo of Ortelli and Dumas, the team secured a spectacular victory, setting the stage for an unforgettable journey ahead.
The momentum continued at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Freisinger Motorsport, supported by Porsche Motorsport, fielded a formidable lineup with drivers Ortelli, Dumas, and Kellners behind the wheel of chassis #3087. Despite the fierce competition, the team showcased exceptional skill and determination, clinching a remarkable 3rd place podium finish at the legendary endurance race.
As the season progressed, the car's prowess was evident once again at the 1,000kms of Spa on September 12th, where Ortelli and Collard delivered a masterful performance, claiming victory and solidifying their place as a force to be reckoned with in the world of motorsport. These standout achievements propelled Freisinger Motorsport to triumph in the N-GT class of the FIA GT championship and secured a commendable second-place finish in the drivers' championship, highlighting the remarkable success of both the team and the exceptional chassis #3087 throughout the memorable 2004 season.
