Model History

In late 2003, Aston Martin announced its highly anticipated return to international motorsport with the development of a GT1 racer based on the DB9 road car. Partnering with Prodrive, the British manufacturer established Aston Martin Racing to design, build, and compete with the new DBR9.

To meet GT1 homologation requirements, key elements of the DB9 road car were retained, including the bonded aluminum chassis and the engine block and heads. Additional torsional strength was added through an intricate roll-over structure. The suspension system, featuring optimized geometry, utilized double wishbones and adjustable Koni shock absorbers. The lightweight rolling chassis was clad in a carbon-fiber composite body with wide wheel arches, a prominent front splitter, and a full-width rear wing for maximum aerodynamic performance.

The DBR9's heart was a heavily reworked version of the DB9’s V12 engine, mounted as far back in the chassis as possible for better weight distribution. This all-aluminum powerplant featured twin overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and dry-sump lubrication. Restricted to comply with regulations, the engine still produced over 600 hp, channeling its power through an X-Trac six-speed sequential gearbox to the rear wheels.

Unveiled to the public in November 2004, the DBR9 was built not only for Aston Martin's factory racing efforts but also for customer teams. Staying true to Aston Martin tradition, factory cars were assigned single-digit chassis numbers, while customer cars carried triple-digit identifiers. The DBR9’s introduction marked a new era in Aston Martin’s motorsport legacy, combining cutting-edge engineering with timeless design.

Chassis DBR9-106

Debuting in 2007, Aston Martin DBR9 chassis 106 began its racing career with Barwell Motorsport in the FIA GT Championship before becoming the flagship entry for Gigawave Motorsport. Competing in its striking Gigawave colors, it quickly established itself as a strong contender, securing podium finishes at the Silverstone Tourist Trophy and the 24 Hours of Spa in 2008. The car achieved a notable GT1 class victory at the 1000 Kilometres of Silverstone in 2009, further cementing its reputation for performance and reliability.

Chassis 106 later joined Young Driver AMR, competing in the FIA GT1 World Championship. In 2010, it secured a GT1 podium finish at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans and earned additional top-tier results throughout its campaigns. Following its retirement from active competition, the car was meticulously maintained and remains a celebrated piece of Aston Martin’s motorsport legacy.

More recently, the car underwent a complete nut-and-bolt restoration by Venture Engineering, renowned marque specialists with extensive experience in the preparation and maintenance of historic Aston Martin racing cars. The restoration was carried out to the highest standards, ensuring chassis 106 remains both mechanically exceptional and highly eligible for prestigious historic racing events worldwide.

With its impressive race history, documented provenance, and connection to some of the most iconic GT races of the era, DBR9 chassis 106 is not only a significant collector’s item but also a competitive and race-ready entrant, prepared to return to the track and relive its glory days.
